The Protection Index, also know as IP,is a international standard for electrical equipment which classifies the degrees of protection. This index is made up of an acronym IP (Ingress Protection), where the first figure indicates protection against solid bodies and the second refers to the protection against liquid bodies.

A camera can be outdoor or indoor, depending on the degree of protection it has, referring to the IEC 60529 standard: Degrees of Protection for the IP protection index, which defines its resistance to ingress of dust and liquids through a 2-digit code and by the IEC 62262 standard for the IK degree of protection, which defines its protection against external mechanical impacts. Although initially the IP protection index had a third number that replaced the IK protection degree, this nomenclature was not considered standard use, which is why the aforementioned standard was developed.
↪ The rating of the IP protection degree is defined by an alpha-numeric code which defines its degree of protection against the penetration of dust and liquids, expressed as IPXY, where:

🔸 The first value "X" describes the level of protection against dust entry.
🔸 The second value "Y" describes the protection against the entry of liquids.
